Trace-element imaging at macroscopic scale in a Belgian sphalerite-galena ore using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

چکیده
Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a fast in-situ analytical technique based on spectroscopic analysis of atomic emission in laser-induced plasmas. Geochemical mapping at macroscopic scale using LIBS was applied to decimetric Zn-Pb ore sample from east Belgium, which consists alternating sphalerite and galena bands. A range elements detected with no or minimal spectral correction, including interest for beneficiation such as Ge, Ag Ga (although the detection gallium could not be confirmed), remediation, especially As Tl. The comparison between Energy Dispersive (EDS) analyses showed that intensities reliably relate elemental concentration although differences spot size limits exist both techniques. images minor trace (Fe, Cu, Ag, Cd, Sb, As, Tl, Ni Ba) obtained revealed great detail compositional heterogeneity ore, growth zones were visible specimen. In addition, each mineral generation has distinct trace-element composition, reflecting geochemical sequence whose potential metallogenic significance district should addressed further work. Although qualitative preliminary, dataset already produced wealth information allowed initiate discussion some genetical crystallochemical aspects. Above all, appears powerful tool screening geochemically large samples selection particular analysis.

Measuring total soil carbon with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).
Improving estimates of carbon inventories in soils is currently hindered by lack of a rapid analysis method for total soil carbon. A rapid, accurate, and precise method that could be used in the field would be a significant benefit to researchers investigating carbon cycling in soils and dynamics of soil carbon in global change processes. We tested a new analysis method for predicting total soi...

Introduction: One of the most promising of instruments selected for the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission for analyzing Martian rocks is the remote Laser-Induced Breakdown Spec-troscopy (LIBS) on the ChemCam instrument package. The LIBS technique involves focusing a laser pulse beam at a distant target with sufficiently high energy that a plasma is made, reducing a small spot on th...
